Portugal at the Top 5 Countries to Retire and Travel Alone
An annual survey of the best countries in the world was released by U.S. News & World Report, along with Y&R’s BAV Consulting and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Their 2017 rankings prioritized countries that enjoyed some measure of peace, quiet and prosperity.
The 2017 Best Countries report and rankings are based on how global perceptions define countries in terms of several qualitative characteristics, impressions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies.
Eighty nations were measured in the report. Each country was scored on each of the 65 country attributes based on a collection of individual survey responses. Attributes were grouped into nine subrankings that rolled into the Best Countries ranking: Adventure, Citizenship, Cultural Influence, Entrepreneurship, Heritage, Movers, Open for Business, Power and Quality of Life. A total of 21,372 individuals from 36 countries in four regions – the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East and Africa – were surveyed.
Portugal ranked nº 24 in the global ranking and is considered to be one of the best countries to travel alone. In 2015, the country welcomed about 10 million tourists, a 10% increase in arrivals from the year before, according to the World Tourism organization. Although the country is still a bit under the radar compared to its European neighbors, here visitors can enjoy stunning golf courses, golden beaches and architectural treasures.
It also ranks highly as one of best countries to retire comfortably. Since 2016, Portugal moved up 9 positions, reaching the top 5 this year. The country is seen as the nº 1 country for offering a pleasant climate, as well the friendly people that live in the Western Countries of Europe.
Portugal is in a high position in terms of Heritage, the attributes of Culturally Accessible, Rich history and Great food have the highest scores, in the Culture Influence, the attributes of Happy, Modern and Culturally Significance are also high.
In the Adventure ranking, attributes such as Scenic, Friendly and Pleasant Climate (with a score of 10) are the most scored attributes for Portugal and, in Quality of Life, the attributes of Affordable, Safe and Family Friendly go up with the highest points.
